Sugar Cut-Out Cookies

Today, SP and I made sugar cut-out cookies. I've been wanting to use my non-Christmas-y cookie cutters, we are having SP's family over for a July 4 BBQ tomorrow, and SP's nephews are in town, so we thought some cookies were a good idea. The recipe I've always used is from an old (sometime in the early 1970's) cookbook my mom had when I was growing up. I have the recipe written on an index card. I have no recollection of the title of the book in which I found it.

The ingredients are the usual: butter, shortening, flour, sugar, vanilla, baking powder, salt, and egg. The dough chills for at least an hour before rolling it out. SP was in charge of rolling and baking the trays of cookies. I was in charge of cutting out the cookies and decorating them.
We made frogs, elephants, bunnies, chicks, and teapots.
They taste pretty good today, but we've noticed that these cookies always seem to taste better the next day. Some of ours are thick, some are very thin - it just depends on how SP felt when he was rolling out the dough!!!
