Home Sweet Home

There's a reason my blogging has been sporadic (OK, pretty much non-existent) and the posts that did post were lackluster. We were on vacation! Twelve glorious days of vacation. Where did we go? We flew to Las Vegas to see my parents and borrow their car to drive to San Diego for a week! It was a beautiful, sunshiny day when we set off bright & early from Las Vegas. I am always amazed by the heat and dryness of the valley and yet right there in front of you on top of the mountains that ring Vegas is snow:
About 5.5 hours later, we arrived at our hotel, the Marriott Gaslamp in the Gaslamp Quarter. The hotel is right across from Petco Park (where the Padres play baseball). We were able to check in early, so we freshened up a bit and then headed out to Point Loma & Cabrillo National Monument.

We wandered through the 'Age of Exploration' exhibit (I love old ships and navigation and old maps), took in the beautiful view, went to the old lighthouse, and checked out the tidepools.

We stayed until the park closed at 5 pm and then it was time to eat! We had already planned to have dinner at Point Loma Seafoods, and it was easy to find, not so easy to find parking. It's a very popular place! We finally secured a space in their 30 minute customer parking area. I secured a table outside and SP went inside to order.

Point Loma Seafoods sells fresh fish that you can purchase and take home to cook and they sell seafood soups/salads/sandwiches, etc., that you can purchase and consume either inside or outside. The fresh fish looked amazing (and pricey!). You order at a counter, receive a number, pick up your food when your number is called, and take your food to an open table. Here's what we ate:
Seafood Soup - Lots of chunky bits of seafood with a very thick red broth that was almost like a sauce. Delicious.

Crab Sandwich - tartar sauce & fresh crab on sourdough. Yum!

Scallop Sandwich - lots of lightly breaded, small scallops with tartar sauce on  sourdough bread. Yum!

We really enjoyed our PLS soup & sandwiches and we're glad we patiently waited for a parking space! There's also an upstairs balcony where you can carry your food and dine.

After dinner, we drove around a bit, returned to the hotel for a quick rest, and then walked around the Gaslamp Quarter for a bit. The Gaslamp area is the center of downtown nightlife, it covers 16.5 blocks, it's designated an historic district, and it once was home to many saloons, gambling halls, and bordellos.
We saw lots of, uh... interesting? entertaining?... people wandering around! Once we tired of wandering, we decided to stop in Chocolat Cremerie, a place Food Collage mentioned from her trip to San Diego.
In addition to gelato and other desserts, they serve crepes, panini, flatbreads, etc. We were in the mood for dessert. SP chose peach gelato and I chose cappuccino gelato:
It was a generous serving and delicious. I found myself wishing I had more in my cup because it was so good! Chocolat Cremerie is quite close to the Marriott Gaslamp, so we made a few stops back during the week. The people who work there are very friendly and we found ourselves relaxing there for a bit in the evenings before heading back to the hotel.
